Fly stitch is a great line stitch that can also be a filling stitch when made in lines. I often use fly stitch as fronds and greenery. Single stitch can also be made as detail stitches. I use them around eyes.
Make an initial straight stitch along the line to be stitched. Then bring the needle up on one side and down on the other. Don’t pull through yet.
Then bring the needle up at the end of the first stitch, so the thread loop is under the needle. Pull through.
Make a stitch down the line to anchor the loop.
Repeat down the line, making loops and anchoring them down.
Finish with a final anchor stitch.
